Busy schedule for Lyceum Club members

-

Lyceum Clubs are “clubs for women interested in arts, sciences, social concerns and in the pursuit of lifelong learning” with the first founded in London in 1904.

And the Te Awamutu Lyceum Club has recently celebrated its 64th birthday.

In 1955 a foundation meeting was held but it wasn’t until 1961 that the Lyceum Club celebrated the opening of its own building in Bank Street, Te Awamutu.

In the early days popular circles included Bridge, Garden, Music, Handcraft, Keep fit and Choir.

Today the club continues to enjoy Writers, Book, Garden and Music circles.

The Te Awamutu Lyceum Club has a busy schedule of activities, with something for everyone.

As well as the various circles which meet on different days of the month, the club has regular activities such as Mahjong on Wednesday afternoons and Bolivia on Thursday afternoons, both from 1-4pm.

The Music Circle, which meets on the fourth Tuesday in the month, enjoys performances from invited guest artists.

On every second Thursday there is a morning tea with a guest speaker and there are three monthly luncheons with a guest speaker.

The morning tea speaker coming up on October 17 is from Total Hearing Care.

Previous speakers have included local councillor, Hazel Barnes and Te Awamutu’s Mayoress, Robyn Mylchreest.

The club also recently hosted the New Zealand Federation of Lyceum Club’s AGM and luncheon which was presided over by Dr Marilyn Mackinder, from Te Kuiti, who was elected the Southern Hemisphere Vice President in Stockholm in May.
