Sanctuary Mountain supported
Following some special learning experiences with Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari’s education team earlier this year, the children of local Pukeatua School decided to raise funds to support Sanctuary Mountain’s work to protect taonga species like kiwi on the maunga.
Over many weeks during Term 2, with support from the adults at school, parents and the local community, students designed and created items to sell at their school market day.
They upcycled, reused, made and built items by hand, such as wooden bait boxes, garden boxes, game boards, painted rocks, handmade candles, beeswax wraps, potted seedlings, flax weaving, handmade recipe books and much more.
By market day the tables were full of impressive wares, the children had big smiles on their faces and their sales signs and sales pitches were at the ready for their customers.
The sunny day was topped off by carloads of support from the community and a magnificent hangi to share.
For Conservation Week last month the whole school, plus more than 20 adults, walked up the road to visit Te Tui a Tane.
In a modest ceremony held in Sanctuary Mountain event centre within the southern enclosure, an envelope beautifully decorated with artworks by the children was handed over to centre staff by principal John McLean containing the proceeds from the Pukeatua School market day.
An incredible $1900 had been raised by just over 90 students, their whanau and teachers.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari staff thanked Pukeatua School students for such a magnificent effort and for their wonderful support of their project and education programme.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari has a few spaces left for the education programme in Term 4.
