Po¯kuru win first champ titles
In successive weeks two teams representing the Po¯kuru Indoor Bowling Club won Champion of Champion events in the Te Awamutu and Districts Indoor Bowling Association competition.
They are the first titles won by the club in its 53 year history.
Paul Walker, Eric Drabble, Helen Empson and Sue Barton were the first to achieve the feat, winning the Rinks. They were followed a week later by John Whitehead and Tricia Hancock in the pairs.
In the other two Champion of Champion events John Whitehead, playing for the Waipa¯ Workingmen’s Club together with Olga Barnes and Marie Gibbes, won the triples and Kevin Marshall, also playing for Waipa¯ Workingmen’s Club eventually overcame Paul Walker in the singles.
The singles competition was played on a two life system, with games of 12 ends.
Each player arrived at the final with two lives intact and each then won one of the next two games by a single shot, requiring a third and deciding game.
It was again just a single shot that made the difference, although Walker was playing catch-up when the last end was played.
