Kiwi wins Aussie boxing award

Floyd Masson awarded round of the year

-

New Zealand-born Floyd Masson received an award at the 2021 Everlast Ausboxing awards for round of the year, for the 10th round in his fight against Mark Flanagan.

The award is an added bonus after winning Champion of the year and International Fight of the year at the 2021 New Zealand Boxing Awards.

Floyd who was born in Te Awamutu, began his amateur boxing career in New Zealand.

Later in his amateur career he moved to Perth in Western Australia to focus more on his boxing career. He turned pro in 2018.

He surprised the New Zealand boxing world when he returned home to fight “Smiley” Navosa Ioata, which he won by decision. His success in Perth included an eight fight winning streak with wins over Christian Ndzie Tsoye and Lance Bryant and capturing the Western Australia State title.

He moved to Queensland, Australia, last year to sign up with a new gym, a new trainer and a new promoter under Angelo Di Carlo at Ace Boxing Group. This is the year where Floyd really started making waves.

In March, he had his warm-up fight against the tough Waikato Falefehi.

In July, he fought for his second boxing title against Joseph Liga for the ANBF Australasian title and his most recent fight was in December against Flanagan defending his Australasian and Australian national titles.

Masson v Flanagan is arguably the fight of the year in 2021 for both Australia and New Zealand. Both boxers were knocked down at one point, titles were on the line, it lasted the full 10 rounds and it was total nonstop action.

The round of the year went to the 10th round of that fight, which is well deserved.

Floyd is looking to have a busy 2022 with his aim to reach the top 10 in one of the four major boxing bodies. He is scheduled to take on Indian boxer Vikas Singh on March 4 in a 10-round fight, which is expected to be for a major regional boxing title.

The fight will be at Eatons Hill Hotel

in Queensland, promoted by Angelo. Other New Zealanders on the card will include New Zealander Junior

Tafa taking on Drew Jackson and New Zealander Billy Limov taking on Declan Kelly for the Australasian title.
