Call for residents to help Waipa¯ move with the times

-

Locals have the power to help shape the next 30 years in Waipa¯ with the recent launch of community feedback for the council’s progressive new transport strategy that affects all residents.

“You will discover it is bigger and bolder than just transport! We are adapting infrastructure to meet changing lifestyles and enhancing community wellbeing,” says Waipa¯ District Council transport manager Bryan Hudson.

“It’s about addressing climate change, safety and improving freight connections. Expect to see exciting new developments with roading, walking and cycleways.”

The public is invited to give feedback on what ideas they like the most. The timeframe has been extended to March 22 to make up for interruptions associated with Covid19. People can complete a five-minute online survey via the council website or do a longer submission if they wish.

“We need more options to connect our people with the places they love. It is essential we future-proof the Waipa¯ travel network to protect against climate change and the extraordinary growth we’re facing,” says Bryan.

The strategy underpins the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport that recognises the important role of transport in supporting wellbeing and liveability in New Zealand communities.

Bryan notes the strategy is focused on responding to national changes and what the community has asked for through early engagement with stakeholders.

“We recognise that transport affects everyone, so naturally we’ve put people at the centre of our solution.”

The Draft Transport Strategy will be reviewed at least every five years to ensure its relevance with policy and community aspirations.

“Waipa¯ is moving with the times in an adventurous new direction! It’s time for residents to have their say,” says Bryan.

The council also accepts feedback via email, post or hard copy.

Hard-copy versions of the online feedback form are available by visiting the council office or phoning 0800 WAIPA¯ DC (0800 924 723).
