Success for Kaipaki

-

Cambridge batted first in this one.

For Kaipaki, Rob Heke and former University of Waikato opening bowler Richard Gilkison took the new ball.

It was in the middle parts of the Cambridge innings when something that is hard to explain happened.

It was like the great Shane Warne was looking down on Kaipaki Oval, Warne is remembered for the ball of the century (20th that is).

But Kaipaki captain Howie Baker thinks he might have bowled the ball of the current century when he got one to bounce and turn and beat Darrin “Bones” Armstrong’s bat for Wayne Clifford to do the rest and stump Armstong.

Baker finished with the fantastic figures of 2-17.

Others to perform with the ball were Dean Busch and left-arm seamer Dylan Jeffries.

Other highlights were Wayne “Robbo” Robinson picking up a wicket and the sight of Leon Holden charging in to bowl four overs of medium pace. Cambridge went on to make 259. Jeffries is fast turning into a Kaipaki legend.

Jeffries opened the batting for the second day in a row for the nation with Taz Kapadia.

Jeffries top scored for the Kaipaki Nation with 37 retired.

Others to contribute to Kaipaki’s total were Hiki Toroa who made 30 retired and was supported in a good partnership with Cooper Robinson who also retired on 33.

Heke chipped in with 21, Captain Baker made 12 and Clifford made 10.

Kaipaki finished up on 174, well short of their target of 260 but the game was played in great spirit.
