Lions donate to a pair of worthy causes

-

After being affected by the Covid pandemic for the past two years, Te Awamutu Lions Club has begun 2022 by making two significant donations, says club president, John Hansen.

“Te Awamutu Lions have been a long-time supporter of the Te Awamutu Community Health Trust, having built the storage garage for both vehicles, donated funding towards the purchase of both vehicles and working with other local Lions clubs to provide the funding for all of the equipment in the new second van,” John says.

“Members of our club are actively involved in the Trust Board and drive the vehicles. A number of our members have really appreciated being able to use the service to get to their own hospital appointments. When we heard that our supporters of Te Awamutu Community Health Trust have been seriously affected by the Covid pandemic, we were happy to make a $10,000 donation to the Trust, which will be used to pay the insurance costs and annual maintenance programmes for the vehicles.”

Te Awamutu Lions agree with John that the Community Health Trust provides a wonderful service for our local community and our Club is happy to be their partner.

“The terrible situation that is occurring in Ukraine has been another issue that has been discussed at recent Lions Club gatherings,” John says. “And we heard about the fantastic humanitarian support that is being provided for the people who have been forced out of their homes and country that is being initiated by Lions Clubs International funded from donations made by Lions Clubs throughout the world. Te Awamutu Lions Club is very happy to support this programme by donating $1000 of locally raised funds.”

“Te Awamutu Lions Club was formed in 1961 and our members are really proud of the many signs throughout the Te Awamutu area that identify the projects we have been involved in over the years,” John says.

“On the third Tuesday of every month we have a dinner meeting, with a guest speaker, at the Te Awamutu Club and our members also regularly gather together for other activities (bowls, golf, coffee sessions at local cafes, etc) .

“Our major fundraising activity involves operating the Club’s KaiKart food caravan which serves food at the Fieldays and local school gala days. However during the past year, because of Covid, these activities have been cancelled so Lions Club members have been involved in renovating and upgrading the KaiKart.

“We are always looking for new members, if you want to find out about Lions and how you can have fun serving the community, please make contact,” says John.
