Para rider strikes gold at worlds

-

Nga¯hinapo¯uri’s Paralympian No. 222 Nicole Murray struck gold last week in the UCI Para Cycling Road World Cup in Elzach, Germany, finishing the women’s C5 time trial in 42 minutes, 13 seconds.

This was Murray’s first podium finish in road cycling and she couldn’t be more delighted.

“[I’m] pretty stoked, eh! It was a great day.

“And my first podium finish in road cycling ever — that’s special.”

Coach Damian Wiseman says Murray just keeps getting better and better – and her mindset was in just the right place for a great race.

Murray, who is a left wrist amputee and rides with some adaptations on her bike, credits the Waikato’s hills with her success on the point-to-point uphill race in Elzach.

“[It] was about strength. You couldn’t hide behind being able to take better lines on corners.

“The course played to my advantage – it felt like New Zealand.

“Living in a hilly spot has come in handy!”
