Te Awamutu to host NZ national table tennis event

-

Two years ago, Kihikihi Table Tennis Club hosted the annual Table Tennis New Zealand Country Club Championships at the Te Awamutu Events Centre.

Due to the Covid restrictions, this tournament was not held in 2021, but it is back this weekend beginning with the Teams Event on Saturday, May 21 before the Individual Event takes place on Sunday, May 22.

This tournament gives all the country clubs an opportunity to play competitive table tennis at a tournament level.

This year there are teams from Featherston, Ka¯piti Coast, Manawatu¯, Pauanui, Rotorua, Taupo¯, Hamilton and Kihikihi, who have entered multiple teams in the tournament.

The Te Awamutu Events Centre and town are the perfect venues to host a tournament of this magnitude due to their outstanding facilities, pools, parks and food options that are available to all players and families.

The teams event comprises three divisions — competitive, socialcompetitive and social, to cater for all the different levels of players. A former New Zealand women’s player and a male player of the same ability

will participate this year.

Kihikihi Table Tennis Club had great success in 2020, taking home the most medals as a club and also the overall team honours, with the combination of Hyrum Sunnex and Bo Nikara, who are entering once again. Sunnex also won the overall individual title.

There is no entry fee to head down and watch some table tennis over the weekend at the Te Awamutu Events Centre. The best day would be for the teams events on Saturday as all the tables will be full throughout the day.

The season has also started for Kihikihi Table Tennis Club.
