O¯ haupo¯ notch two wins on sponsors appreciation day
Saturday saw both O¯ haupo¯ senior rugby sides get the win against their Hinuera opposition — a great triumph for O¯haupo¯’s sponsors’ day.
O¯ haupo¯ B, in their first win of 2022, started off strongly at O¯ haupo¯ Memorial Park.
Halfback Kaleb Roberts opened up their account with a long-range intercept try.
Evergreen first five-eighths Michael Monaghan converted to take the lead, 7-0.
O¯ haupo¯ B dominated most of the match with tries going to fullback Brent “Smithy” Smith after a great break down the field by centre Ray George, halfback Roberts grabbed a second and Monaghan dotted down for one himself, adding the extras too.
Reserve back Sheldon Seeley added a penalty late in the match, giving O¯ haupo¯ B a 27-17 victory.
O¯ haupo¯ ’s man of the match award went to first-time prop Mike Keesom, putting in a dominant 80-minute shift.
In the second game, Ohaupo¯ ¯ A side took down Hinuera 27-20 in Division 1 rugby.
O¯haupo¯’s first try went to fullback Queyst Michael-Tapu, who bamboozled the Hinuera defence and dotted down near the sticks.
No 8 Charlie “Stu” Matthews grabbed two tries for the
Ohaupo¯ ¯ B won 27-17 against Hinuera B. second week in a row, while lock Jacob Reymer also crossed the line.
Hinuera scored two penalties in the first half and capitalised in the second while O¯ haupo¯ were down on men, grabbing two converted tries.
Fortunately for O¯haupo¯, they continued to hold the rivals out, winning by seven points — a second great result to thank the Ohaupo¯ ¯ sponsors for¯all they do for the club.
Ohaupo¯ ’s man of match, halfback Scott Thomas, landed two conversions and a penalty goal.
This Saturday sees the big local derby against Pirongia for their sponsors’ day at Pirongia Domain, where the McInally Cup will be contested between both A and B sides.
