Squad fails to win Waysy Shield off Hamilton

The Te Awamutu Sub-Union side took on Hamilton at Pirongia Domain in their first Peace Cup game of 2022, fresh off a round one bye. The Sub-Union side is made up of Te Awamutu’s local clubs, Kihikihi, O¯ haupo¯ , O¯ torohanga, Pirongia, Te Awamutu Marist and Te Awamutu Sports.

Hamilton placed the Finlay Cup (Waikato Rugby Union Sub-Union trophy) and the Waysy Shield up for grabs.

The Waysy Shield remembers Hamilton Rugby Union legend Peter Way and is contested between Hamilton and Te Awamutu each time they meet.

The visitors scored the first try of the match when No 8 former All Blacks Sevens player Luke Masirewa crashed over for the touchdown, before a fired-up Te Awamutu came back with a five-pointer to winger Josh Thomas (O¯haupo¯).

Hamilton ran in two more tries and took a 19-5 lead into halftime.

The second half saw Hamilton run in a further three tries, with the hosts adding a score to Te Awamutu Sports first five-eighth Logan converted his own try.

Te Awamutu fell short 38-12, and Hamilton retained the Finlay Cup and the Waysy Shield for another season.

Led by head coach Michael Earwaker and his assistants Ray Bennett, Johnny de Thierry and Waylon Tangohau, the 2022 Te Awamutu side includes the likes of former Waikato, Bay of Plenty and King Country prop Ted Tauroa (O¯ torohanga) and Waikato NPC preseason member Latrell Smiler-Ah Kiong.

This Saturday will see Te Awamutu pay reigning champions Central
