Former head student makes NZ uni team

Former Te Awamutu College head student Atareipoun­amu Crown, now studying at the University of Otago, has been selected at halfback for the 2022 New Zealand Universiti­es Rugby Women’s squad.

A member of the 2021 Te Awamutu College Girls 1st XV, 2021 NZ Ma¯ori Nga¯ Mareikura Wa¯hine Under 18 rugby team and a squad member for the 2021 Waikato Farah Palmer Cup wider training group, Crown is a young player with a bright future.

“It meant a lot that I get another chance to wear another black jersey to represent my country and family once again,’ says Crown.

Formerly a Kihikihi rugby club representa­tive, Crown is in her first year at the University of Otago where she is studying health science.

“I’ve been playing for Otago University women’s team, a part of the wider training squad for Otago Spirit and I’m a squad member of the Otago Spirit Developmen­t team.”

The 2022 New Zealand Universiti­es Rugby Women’s side are set to play two matches in Christchur­ch at the University of Canterbury Rugby Football Club.

The first match on September 25 will see them take on the Cantabrian­s XV at 2pm.

The second and final match against the New Zealand Defence Force will kick off at 12.05pm on October 1.
