Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead for concert

-

The Come Together trilogy of shows have become a staple fixture on the New Zealand entertainment calendar, and the first show in the 2022 series, David Bowie: The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, was, as expected, a runaway success.

The second, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Damn The Torpedoes, is set to follow suit in double quick time.

In true Kiwi fashion, some of the greatest names in our entertainment industry have gathered together to faithfully reproduce Damn The Torpedoes — word for word and note for note.

Be prepared for a concert like no other as Jon Toogood, Milan Borich, Adam Hattaway, Dianne Swann, Brett Adams, Jol Mulholland (MD), Matthias Jordan, Wayne Bell and Mark Hughes deliver the album that put Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers into the international spotlight.

Tom Petty’s songs have defined rock radio since the 70s.

As Pitchfork so aptly put it: Damn the Torpedoes is the peak of Tom Petty’s songwriting with the Heartbreakers. Slick, big, and immutably classic, the album is a front-to-back feat of production and songwriting.

Fun fact: The title is a reference to a famous quote by Admiral David Farragut: “Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead”.

Damn The Torpedoes sat at No 2 on the Billboard albums chart for seven weeks — kept from the top spot by Pink Floyd’s The Wall — and would eventually sell nearly three million copies.

It contains the singles Refugee, Here Comes My Girl, Even The Losers and Don’t Do Me Like That among its nine stellar tracks. Add to that other great Tom Petty numbers such as American Girl, Breakdown, The Waiting, Don’t Come Around Here No More, I Won’t Back Down, Runnin’ Down A Dream, Free Fallin’, Learning To Fly, Into The Great Wide Open and Mary Jane’s Last Dance and you can sure this talented cast and crew will have you rockin’ till you drop!

Remember too that Petty was a member of The Traveling Wilburys, the supergroup who served up such memorable numbers as Last Night, Handle With Care and, of course, the mega single End Of The Line.

And let’s not forget Petty’s composition — Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around which became Stevie Nicks’ most successful solo single, as well as that of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Will the cast team up to belt that one out?

There’s only one way to find out. Be there!

Even better, we’re offering you the chance to pick up a double pass to the Auckland show to witness the magic that isa Come Together show and the creative genius of Tom Petty.

This Come Together show will have you remembering the best years of your life and making memories to take with you through the rest of it.

As one patron was heard to remark after leaving a previous Come Together show — ‘Don’t worry about whether the seats are comfortable — you’ll likely be on your feet most of the night!”

’Nuff said.
