Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) president Gill Naylor says the organisation recognises the importance of sharing stories about the innovative women living and working in rural Aotearoa New Zealand.

“So it is an absolute pleasure to showcase and promote the incredible creativity of ruralwomenin Aotearoa New Zealand, especially our NZI Rural Women NZ Business Award Winners.

“Our Rural Champion Award holds a very special place in these awards as it is given to a person who goes above and beyond in their support of the rural sector.

“Harriet Bremner of Gurt & Pops won this award in November 2021 for her fantastic work promoting farm safety and rural health and wellbeing through her books.

“In her new book, Wool’s the Word, Harriet celebrates a very topical subject — our wool industry.”

When Harriet approached The Merino New Zealand Company with her idea for a new book, they were keen to be involved in another innovative way to tell the story of New Zealand wool and educate people about it at the same time.

“My partner and I farm on Jericho Station in Southland and we know it has been a tough few years for wool producers, but wool is increasingly the word on people’s lips,” says Harriet.

“It is so great to be able to write about this fantastic sustainable, renewable and incredibly versatile resource and encourage conversations about the wonders of wool from the fleece off the sheep’s back to wool’s extraordinary natural properties and the range of items that can be made
