Susan Devoy to inspire our future sports stars
Fundraising auction features at event
Former world squash champion, Race Relations Commissioner, Halberg Trust chairwoman and Celebrity Treasure Island star Dame Susan Devoy is guest speaker at this year’s Cornerstone Trust Luncheon.
Dame Susan became a household name in New Zealand when she became the world No 1-ranked squash player in 1984.
She was dominant in the late 1980s and early 1990s, winning the World Open on four occasions and the British Open eight times.
When she retired in 1992 she was the Australian, British, French, Hong
Kong, Irish, Scottish, Swedish, New Zealand and world champion. Although her retirement was a surprise to many, she took on many more challenges off the court. In the following years she was on the Auckland DHB, chief executive of Sport Bay of Plenty, and New Zealand Race Relations Commissioner. She has supported many charities, including Muscular Dystrophy, mental illness and The Aunties on Celebrity Treasure Island. Her rich life story will no doubt make her an entertaining speaker at the Cornerstone charity event, which supports local rising sports stars.
MC for this year’s luncheon is former national league footballer
Steven Holloway, who is podcast host for Between Two Beers and premium sports editor for NZME.
He will introduce guests, interview local athletes who have been Cornerstone Trust grant recipients and highlight their achievements.
The fundraising auction will feature a variety of goods, some valuable services and a collection of amazing sports memorabilia.
The Cornerstone luncheon is sponsored by the Davies Family Charitable Trust.
Cornerstone Trust fundraising luncheon: Friday, November 24, from noon at Te Awamutu Sports Club. Tickets ($100) from Cornerstone Trustee Jeanette Ballantyne (jeanette@sgca.co.nz)
