Calligraphy: Well-written drive

Power up with Santa Fe Calligraphy, an exclusive top-of-the-line model SUV

- DEAN TAYLOR

For those who prefer the low-down power and torque of a diesel engine, Hyundai New Zealand now has the Santa Fe Calligraphy, an exclusive top-of-the-line model of the fourth-generation large SUV with a diesel option.

I drove the new model, which is now available from Rosetown Motor Group.

It is available with the 2.2-litre diesel R-Series engine, which makes 148 kilowatts of power and 440 Newton metres of torque, and has a host of enhancements and unique features.

The diesel power is delivered through an eight-speed transmission to drive all four wheels — but it is still relatively economical, with a rated economy of 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

Drive mode can be set to Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart — with snow, mud and sand terrain options.

The drive is comfortable, with excellent handling and low cabin noise. The heads-up display is perfect with regard to keeping your concentration on the road, and as is becoming the norm, a range of driver aids keep you and others safe.

The Santa Fe Calligraphy has a bold exterior design, including a dark chrome grille and distinctive 20-inch wheels — with meaty 255/45R20 rubber — that give it a unique look and enhance the ride quality. The spare is also a fullsize alloy.

The interior is filled with luxurious premium materials, including Napa leather.

The headling and pillar trim is suede. The 10.25” touchscreen operates a full suite of infotainment apps. It has an excellent sound system with all the usual modern input options. It is also big — a seven-seater with a host of configurations for different loads. Passengers are spoiled by creature comforts and all the nooks and crannies they need for personal items, plus charging points for devices.

To add to the exclusivity, the Santa Fe Calligraphy is a limitededition variant and the last of the diesels, as the European-inspired marque looks to the hybrid and electric future.
