Black Friday Blowout is back

Fun, games and big deals promised for second Blowout

- Jesse Wood

The second annual Black Friday Blowout street party, hosted by the Te Awamutu Business Chamber, with support from the Waipā District Council, will set the town buzzing tomorrow night.

Alexandra St, the main street and heart of Te Awamutu, will be closed and brought to life with all sorts of fun for the community - street performers, amusement rides, fun for the kids and special shopping deals from our local retailers.

It will be a family-friendly event with entertainment, music, food and a side of retail therapy.

Last year’s Blowout was deemed a great success by organisers, participants and the public.

Shops reported good business, with some staying open later than expected while business was brisk.

Organiser and Te Awamutu Business Chamber chairwoman Maria Heslop says the event is about making Te Awamutu a good place “to live, to work and to shop”.

“The inspiration behind it is to support the retail businesses in Te Awamutu but also to provide a community event,” Heslop says.

“We’re severely lacking in things that bring us together as a community.”

The event has been based on the pre-Christmas Midnight Madness from about two decades ago and many community volunteers will be

involved.

“We’ll have local volunteers from Te Awamutu Rotary, Te Awamutu Lions Club, Te Awamutu Pakeke Lions Club, Rosetown Lions of Te Awamutu and the Te Awamutu Community Menz Shed as well as Te Awamutu Pippins,” Heslop says.

These community groups will volunteer their time to help with the inflatables and rides, selling food and raffles, clearing traffic and ensuring that the event runs smoothly overall.

Head into town on Friday night to enjoy the atmosphere and get all of your Christmas shopping done while

the kids are being entertained.

The Te Awamutu Business Chamber can’t wait to bring our community together for this awesome night in the heart of town.

“Get in behind it. A lot of our retailers will be open, they’ll be doing great Black Friday Blowout specials for the night,” Heslop says.

“It’s all about supporting local and getting out there with friends, family and other families to have a good time. It’s a win-win for everybody.

“I also need to give special thanks to Waipā District Council and to all the local businesses who have donated funds and vouchers to make this event possible.”

The Black Friday Blowout street party will run from 5.30pm until 10pm.

The event also coincides with the inaugural Misty Flicks Film Festival. Friday is the opening night at the Te Awamutu Regent Theatre.

The festival will feature content, short content, workshops, panels and social events, with the likes of New Zealand artist and producer Tiki Taane’s documentary, Tiki Taane in Session with CSO (Christchurch Symphony Orchestra), featuring.
