In-house cricket clash a showcase

Green and Gold battle out match in true blue display

-

Saturday saw an in-house battle between Kaipaki Cricket Club Green and Kaipaki Cricket Club Gold at the Kaipaki Oval. Green players Jarrod McDonald, Richard Parsons, Dylan Jeffries and James Parsons were awarded their 10-game caps.

Captains Zach Mahaffey and Dylan Jeffries strode to the middle of the oval for the toss.

Gold won the toss and didn’t have to think twice, as they decided to bowl first.

With the overhead conditions, batting was always going to be tricky early on.

Simon White took the new ball from the tennis court end, bowling Leith Schwass and Richard Parsons with consecutive balls.

This brought Sean Gutry to the wicket, who survived the hat-trick ball.

White took 2/18 off his seven overs and was also sensational in the field.

Captain Jeffries bowled the second over of the day from the opposite end.

Jeffries removed Tony Biesiek lbw and Tommy Duncan bowled, with consecutive balls.

This brought David Fox to the middle, joining Gutry and managing to survive the second hat-trick opportunity.

Jeffries also finished with 2/18 off his seven overs.

Kaipaki Green required a big rescue mission.

Gutry showed a sound technique as he reached 18 before being bowled by Kevin Morgan.

Morgan and Mac Gilkison bowled together in tandem during the middle part of Green’s Innings.

Morgan finished with 1/7 off seven very accurate overs which included two maidens.

Gilkison got a good carry through to the keeper and attacked the crease. Even though going wicketless through his spell, he bowled with a good pace and troubled the Green batsmen.

The other bowler used by Kaipaki Gold was leg-spinner William Mitchell.

Green battled their way back into the game, with McDonald playing an outstanding innings.

McDonald finished 76 not-out which included seven fours and four sixes.

At the other end, Fox played a contrasting innings, finishing 24 notout to help give his team something to defend after being in all sorts of trouble early on.

In the field, Sam Musty was sensational and well-supported by Hiki Toroa, who has a newly found confidence.

The innings were interrupted several times due to rain.

Kaipaki Gold opened their batting with Lance Lee and Max McNamara.

McNamara was strong on the offside and Lee, a typical left-handed batsman, was strong behind square on both sides of the wicket.

Lee was first to go when he chopped one on from Mahaffey.

Mahaffey shared the new ball with Mark Hazelton and wobbled the ball around off the seam accurately.

McNamara was next to go when he was bowled by impressive offspinner Gutry.

This brought Dominic SmithHodgson and Dale Hopkins to the wicket.

Smith-Hodgson was strong through cover-point and wide midon, finishing with 36 not-out, including a four and two sixes.

Hopkins was strong through midwicket and finished 37 not-out, which included three fours and two sixes.

In the field for Kaipaki Green, Sean Telfer was sharp as was young James Parsons.

After several rain breaks, the game was rained off, but the game was a great shop window for Kaipaki Cricket Club.

Gold got the result through the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method and became the first team to lift the newly named Jeffries/Mahaffey Cup, christened after the two young captains, who have both played over 100 games for Kaipaki.
