Kaipaki XI on a roll with second trophy

-

Kaipaki Cricket Club XI faced the Seddon Park grounds staff last weekend at Kaipaki Oval and took their third Sunday-fixture victory in as many games.

Caitlin Pringle, daughter of former Black Cap Chris Pringle, made her debut for Kaipaki while Zach Mahaffey was presented with his Kaipaki 100-game badge.

Graeme “Mintie” Mead also received his 10-game cap for the rural club.

The teams played for the Broken Bats Trophy, an award that was handmade by Mead.

Kaipaki XI captain Mahaffey and

Seddon Park’s KJ Johnson shook hands, with the visitors winning the toss and deciding to bowl first.

Kaipaki opened the batting with Sean Bonenkamp and Dom SmithHodgson.

Smith-Hodgson was first to go for 15, hitting a 4.

Bonenkamp made an eye-catching 39, including six 4s.

In the middle parts of Kaipaki’s innings, evergreen Shane “Swampy” Whittaker played a typical lefthander innings with cuts and pulls behind square, hitting four 4s.

Mark “Sparky” Hazelton also made a quick-fire 23 including a 6 and three 4s. Finishing the innings off were Pringle and Erin Hunt, with Kaipaki making 173.

Kaipaki then charged on to their oval, keen to defend their total.

Mead took the new ball, alongside Hazelton, and bagged the first wicket in the first over of the innings. Mac Gilkison then took 3/7. Pringle bowled in tandem with Hunt, who took 2/20, while Sean Gutry picked up 1/22.

The other bowler to take wickets was Dale Hopkins — and what a spell, picking up 2/9 off his three overs.

All bowlers were backed by brilliant fielding. Leading the way was Smith-Hodgson, taking two catches and charging around saving many a run. Others to take catches were Bonenkamp, Hunt and Rhys Duncan.

The Seddon Park Grounds Staff were bowled out for 167.

Kaipaki have won two trophies this season for their trophy cabinet.
