Annual bowls tournament defies odds

Betty Gibson Te Awamutu tournament triumphs over adversity

-

Bowls Te Awamutu’s annual Betty Gibson Women’s TwoDay Tournament was held over February 13-14, drawing 24 teams from various clubs across the North Island.

In previous years, both Covid and bad weather events had caused either cancellation or low entry numbers.

Tournament organiser Gae Young and match committee convenor Arthur Twyford said they were very pleased with the way the tournament had run, from the efforts of club members to the fine weather throughout.

They thanked the tournament sponsors and the teams who had entered.

Twyford spoke about the late club member Betty Gibson, in whose memory the tournament is named.

Teams came from Tui Park, Katikati, Taupō, Whangamatā, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Frankton Junction, hope, Putāruru, Cambridge Central, Te Puke, Piopio, Rewa, Raglan (2), Te Awamutu (3) and six composite teams.

Major local sponsors were Edwards & Hardy Roofing, who have been involved with the club for over thirty years, Steve Gibson Accounting and Pak’nSave Te Awamutu.

Other local sponsors included Mitre 10 Mega, Bed Bath & Beyond and Sanders Pharmacy.

Edwards & Hardy sales manager Adam Hollard was the guest speaker, and presented the two major hamper prizes donated by Mitre 10 Mega and Pak’nSave.

The first six placed teams received their prizes from club patron Margaret Littlewood:
