Ngāhinapōuri boys win Fred Amess Cup
Ōhaupō girls again take out shield final
Arecord 32 local primary school football teams competed in the annual Fred Amess Cup competition last Friday at Te Awamutu’s Sherwin Park.
The competition was established by Fred Amess, the first patron of Te Awamutu Association Football Club, and played in Te Awamutu in the 1970s.
The cup was put away and not thought of again for many years until it was discovered and resurrected by Billy Carter in 2006.
It has been a regular tournament fixture for the past 18 years.
There were 22 boys and mixed teams and 10 girls teams from 13 local schools.
The day-long competition had 88 games played to find the cup, plate and shield final victors.
Ngāhinapōuri Primary School boys were eventual winners of the Fred Amess Cup, edging out haupō Primary School boys in a penalty shoot-out after the scores were locked at 0-0 at fulltime. The shootout was won 3-2 by Ngāhinapōuri.
The plate final was also a close-run affair with Pāterangi Primary School boys overcoming a spirited Pōkuru Primary School boys team 1-0.
In the girls shield final, surprise package Ngutunui Enviro School were intent on ending the dynasty that has been haupō girls, who have won the shield no less than the past eight years or more.
haupō were in no mood to be upset and stormed to the finish winning 4-0.
A great day was had by all and the success was owed to the volunteers from Te Awamutu College and Te Awamutu AFC.
