Te Puke on the board with win

- By BARRY LEABOURN

Te Puke grabbed their first win of the Baywide Cup at Blake Park on Saturday when they held on against a determined Mount Maunganui bowling attack to claim a three-wicket win.

Te Puke bowler Cam Riley had the Mount Maunganui batsmen on the back foot from the start, removing the two Mount openers and danger-man Dan Smith to have the home side in trouble at 23 for four.

Riley came back to dismiss Tony Goodin for 12 as the Mount No 10 was starting to hit out.

The Mount’s innings ended in the 44th over when they were bowled out for 117. Brody Gilroy and Mikaere Leef also bowled with enthusiasm, taking two wickets apiece.

Te Puke openers Tai Bridgman-raison (31) and Blair Mckenzie (20) got the reply off to a strong start, with the first wicket falling at the 49-run mark. When Dan Price was caught and bowled by Peter Drysdale, Te Puke seemed well on the way to victory at 86/4.

However, Drysdale wove some more magic with the ball to take three further scalps at little cost, with the visitors eventually holding on with three wickets to spare.

Te Puke Reserves slipped down the standings, beaten by the Singh CC. Te Puke batted first at home on the Te Puke Domain and were bowled out for 159.

Scott Struiksma and Reinhardt Kruger each posted 30 before being dismissed. The Singh XI got the runs required for victory with five wickets to spare.

The three Papamoa B Grade sides sit with a share of the lead at the top of the competition points table after successes on Saturday.

Papaomas had a short and sharp game against the Singh CC, bowling them out for 79 and cruising home with seven wickets in hand. Andrew Goldsmith led his side home with a well constructed innings that produced an unbeaten 37 runs.

Papamoa Tangaroa bowled first and faced a reasonable solid target, restricting Mount Maunganui to 183/9. Aaron Barbour did plenty of damage with the ball, finishing with a five wicket bag. Ryan Foord and Aaron Barbour were in sterling form with the bat, Foord top scoring with 72 runs.

Papamoa Wanderers posted 163 all out against Tauranga Boys’ College then bowled the Tauranga Boys’ 2nd XI out for 105 to claim a solid 58-run win. Wanderers’ ace bowler Chris Uden finished with another five wickets in his team’s scorebook.
