Student business gets help from council
YES company Sustainabag awarded seed funding
ATe Puke High School Young Enterprise (YES) team has been awarded seed funding from Tauranga City Council. An allocation of $400 has gone to Sustainabag made up of Manaia Peina, Teagan Price and Hannah Mollier. The company makes veganfriendly tote bags with a bag filled with goodies being donated to Women’s Refuge for every 10 bags sold.
The distribution of funding was determined by how the team’s business contributes to at least one of the YES principles of support.
A panel of judges addresses what the funding for is used for.
The panel is made up of MP support worker Parewhati Taikato, rangatahi adviser Charlie Eggleton, marketing specialist Kane Tereapii and previous YES winner Amber Harrison.
Judges commended the team for its hard work and determination and the challenges completed so far.
“Our goal was to recognise what your YES business does to make our region a better place and impact our local community in a positive way which you have conveyed efficiently and in turn have been awarded your resource,” said the judges.
“You have demonstrated your principles towards supporting environmental sustainability and safe and resilient communities fantastically.
“It is clear you are serving the community by donating a bag filled with resources to the Women’s Refuge, however we would like to see more clarity surrounding how you have supported Kaupapa Maori Outcomes specifically.
“Don’t limit yourself to your desired target market, we believe
Sustainabag can be targeted in a variety of diverse markets. We loved your product, so keep up on the hard work.”
