1868 — August 21. The foundation stone for St Thomas’ Anglican Church in Maketu¯ is laid.

1892 — August 23. The first recorded burial at Te Puke Cemetery is of Mary Cove Vercoe aged 72.

1900 — August 21. A second meeting is held for settlers of Te Puke, Pongakawa and Maketu¯ who wish to secure a resident doctor.

1911 — August 23. The Rotorua to Paengaroa coach, with seven passengers aboard, is involved in an accident between the 18 and 19 mile pegs.
