TCROSS COUNTRY

e Puke Intermediate head of PE Cam Black and his cross country students had a very successful day at the Super 11 Cross Country Championships held at the national Waipuna Welcome Bay course.

This event is attended by the intermediate schools from Gisborne and all through the BOP.

The attendance from Te Puke Intermediate was so encouraging that almost all of the qualified athletes were at the championship event.

To qualify each school sent the top five runners in each of the year 7 and 8 girls, and year 7 and 8 boys.

As participation was fantastic to see, the results were very good and exciting.

Te Puke results:

Year 7 girls. Sofia Wellman 10th, Regan Kingi 12th, Cerys Robertson 13th, Penny Lyford 20th, Year 7 Boys Bowen Pohe 21st, Ty Kelly 27th, Walter Anderson 28th. Year 8 girls Olivia Mclachlan 1st, Jessy-mac Cook 23rd, Skyla Petri 24th, Sophie Vomacka 30th. Year 8 boys Hayden Williamson 6th, Sheldon Hogan 8th, Oliver Brown 24th, James Mathews 27th.

Olivia (Liv) ran first place in the year 8 girls. Liv is under the training and guidance of local Te Puke Athletic and Harrier Accredited Athletics NZ Coach Selwyn Mawkes.

Mr Black said it has been many, many years since Te Puke had a win in the championships.

The second place runner is Sophia Maltai/spence from Mount Intermediate and is a running partner of Liv’s. The girls ran very well.

The Aims games are in the week of September 4-9 and the cross country kicks off the competition on the Sunday morning.

Te Puke cross country runners will again run the event but this time it is all of New Zealand and around 180 runners in each race. We wish them all the best.

If there anyone out there from all schools that would like to have a look at what is to offer with track and field, cross country and more, please in the first instance call Selwyn Mawkes on 0272518779.

Alternatively you could contact your school and they would help you from there.
