CLUBS UPDATE

Warm Rotary welcome

On September 7, the Rotary Clubs of Maketu, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui will be welcoming Rodney Wong, Manawatu¯ business leader and prominent Rotarian. Wong along with Scott Bruce, were key drivers in the successful Wildbase Recovery Programme. Wildbase is a specialist centre which provides shelter and care for native wildlife recovering from treatment at Massey University’s

Wildbase Hospital and was an exciting opportunity for the Palmerston North community and Rotary Clubs to contribute towards conserving and protecting native species.

The three Bay of Plenty-based clubs already give back to the community around $100,000 per year, not including thousands of volunteer hours. They have a high profile with their individual community projects but Maketu President Charles Peni believes it is time for the clubs to take grasp of the 2022 Rotary theme of Imagine and to start planning and driving a combined initiative which supports one larger, meaningful project.

“If Wildbase can result from the passion and dedication of Palmerston North Rotarians and supporters, imagine what we can achieve here in the Bay,” Peni says. The joint Rotary meeting is at Te Puke Golf Club, September 7, 5.30pm. Contact Charles Peni on 027 2730031 rotarymaketu@gmail. com for further information or to register your interest.

U3A numbers swell

Those attending the early August night meeting enjoyed a very informative presentation by Mark Whitworth from the Port Company. The next day meeting will be held at Arataki Community Centre at 10am on September 6. The entry charge is $5 — cash only.

The guest speaker will be Professor Ian Hawes, who heads the Antarctic Research Programme that is carried out by Waikato University. It promises to be an interesting talk.
