THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
1882 — October 6: The Bay of Plenty Times reports the Kaituna Bridge is opened with the first vehicle across a cart load of fish driven by James J Piercy of Maketu¯ .
1908 — October 2: The works superintendent of the post office starts the erection of telephone wires at Te Puke.
1921 — October 4: Three German machine guns arrive in Te Puke as the town's share of the war trophies allotted to the Bay of Plenty.
1926 — October 6: Te Ranga School opens in a new building about a mile further up Te Matai Rd. The original school building is then used as the district hall.
1958 — October 5: The Te Puke Beautifying Society is formed. Among its aims are the encouragement of civic pride in Te Puke and surrounds and the further improvement of public parks and open spaces.
