Food, drink, children’s rides and chance to pick up a bargain at the various stalls Students enjoy debating contest

-

Postponed last year, the Te Puke Baptist Church’s Ocktoberfest returns on October 15. The morning will start with music from the the pipes of the Te Puke and District Highland Pipe Band.

There will be food and drink options including a sausage sizzle, spit roast, real coffee and morning tea.

For children, there will be a bouncy castle and slide, mini golf, sawdust dig, hit the rat, a puppet show and cookie decorating.

Petrolheads and anyone who can appreciate machinery will be catered for with a couple of American muscle cars on hand offering rides around town for a small charge.

There will be a chance to pick up a bargain at the various stalls, including white elephant, pre-loved clothes, plants, furniture, books and the always popular home made jams,

Te Puke High School’s debate club took two teams to an interschool debate competition against Mount Maunganui College recently.

The two teams consisted of all junior students who went up against Mount Maunganui College’s senior and junior teams.

One of the Te Puke High School teams was able to steal a win against Maunganui College’s senior team, while the second team came very cakes, preserves and ginger beer.

Eftpos will be available and transport can be arranged for larger items to be delivered within the Te Puke area.

All proceeds go to helping the children and youth in the church and the local community. Past recipients have been Te Puke Intermediate School, Te Puke Utd Football Club, Te Puke Scouts, Youth Encounter and the Mainly Music programme run by the church.

In the past the Ocktoberfest has also featured a fun run and, while this won’t happen this year, organisers hope it will be back in 2023.

Ocktoberfest is on October 15 from 9am at the church on the corner of Malyon St and Station Rd. close to winning its debate as well.

Time and energy goes into preparation for debate events.

Students are given the moots, or topics, prior and then perform research to help them create their arguments. Topics consisted of the banning of mobile phones in school and removing GST on fruit, vegetables and meat.

Te Puke High School’s debate club has been running for some time. It is an optional after school activity held once a week.

It is a fun way for students to learn and practice the skills of debating while also learning about current and relevant topics. Students also develop other skills in critical thinking and public speaking.

Te Puke High School debate teams are: EJ Sigue, Mars Brown, Whakaio Seymour, Bella Ngawhika, Juliet King, Ella Daniel and Cody Parker.
