Flying Mullet Te Puke have got off to a flying start in the Bayleys Bay of Plenty Cup premier cricket competition. After winning against Geyser City from Rotorua in Round 1, Te Puke secured another win against Lake Taupo¯ in the second round

After declaring in the 57th over, Te Puke had 274 runs on the board with only three wickets down. Captain Blair Mckenzie (106 not out) and UK overseas player Ben Bodha (77 not out) closed the innings with a partnership of 159.

Mckenzie had a consistent game with both bat and gloves, also and catching two of the wickets, off Josh Earle and Iman Singh. After bowling 6.3 overs, leg spinner Iman Singh bowled the winning wicket, finishing up with three wickets for eight runs.

Josh Earle claimed six wickets for the second weekend in a row.

Lake Taupo¯’s batting line-up was no match for Te Puke’s bowling attack. Once Habib Malik (29) and Michael Mitchell’s (19) wickets were taken, none of the remaining batsmen were able to get more than 15 runs.

Amassing 271 runs wasn’t quite enough for Pa¯pa¯moa with Mount Maunganui chasing the total down in 45 overs. Nikhil Vishwanth fell three short of his century, when Dominic Crombie (2) took his wicket.

For Pa¯pa¯moa, two young players Xavier Lea (71) and Kegan Bromilow (24 not out) helped put runs on the board. Performing with the bat and ball, Lea ended the game with 71 runs and two wickets next to his name.

Mount Maunganui’s Craig Baldry and Harry Burns claimed two wickets each. Baldry bowled 14 overs, going for 32 runs, while Burns bowled nine overs at a cost of 43 runs.

Pa¯ pa¯ moa took the prized wicket of Pete Drysdale (48) after 69 balls, but unfortunately for Pa¯pa¯moa, Ben Pomare was at his brutal best, smacking 161 not out off 130 balls.
