Pa¯pa¯moa Kings retained the Don Warner Challenge Trophy for the second time this season after a defeating Aquinas College by 58 runs at Fergusson Park.

The Don Warner prize has introduced an extra edge to the Classic Builders Reserve Grade competitions, with the holder putting the challenge trophy on the line every week, home and away.

Pa¯pa¯moa Kings won the coin toss and elected to bat. The Aquinas bowlers warmed to their task, and had the opposition in some trouble at three down with just 28 runs on the board. The arrival of Jasdeep Sidhu at the crease upped the momentum, with the number six batsman, going on to top score with 47 runs as his team was dismissed for 160.

The Pa¯pa¯moa bowlers ripped through the students top and middle order and had them in desperate straits at 43/7. A dogged fightback from Tayte Marsh (23) and Asa Banbury (33) gave the team respectability, before they were bowled out for 102.

Pa¯pa¯moa Cricket Club loyalties will be put to one side next Saturday when Pa¯ pa¯ moa Kings square off with the Pa¯pa¯moa Second XI at the Alice Johnson Oval, with the Don Warner trophy again up for grabs.

The news wasn’t so good for the other WBOPCA Te Puke and Papamoa sides. The Pa¯ pa¯ moa Second XI encounter with Baaj Sports was abandoned without a ball being bowled in anger, due to a waterlogged outfield.

Mount Maunganui bowler Kyle Dovey ripped through the Te Puke

Reserves to bundle them out for 89, with the former Bay of Plenty representative bowler taking five wickets at a cost of 24 runs. Mount Maunganui then cruised to victory for the loss of two wickets.

A Classic Builders Division One battle-royal took place, between Te Puke Blue and Baaj Sports on the artificial surface at Gordon Spratt Reserve. Baaj Sports batted first and were bowled out for 176. Te Puke bowlers Swayam Kaul (4/32) and Bhupi Singh (3/51) did the damage with the ball.

Two solid batting performances from Swayam Kaul (50) and Bikram Sandhu (31), weren’t enough to stop the Baaj bowlers restricting Te Puke

Blue to 132 for the loss of eight wickets.

Papaomas were involved in a short and sharp game with Cadets. The Pa¯pa¯moa team were dismissed for 96, with the side based at the Tauranga Domain getting home with nine wickets to spare.

Te Puke Chandra Panjab lost their first Classic Builders Division Two competition game of the season, after a nail biter against Mount Maunganui Fourth XI. Te Puke took first use of the batting strip to be bowled out for 142. Kala Singh anchored his sides turn at bat with a gritty 61 runs.

Mount Maunganui were made to fight like tigers to get home for the win points on offer. Harpreet Kang bowled good line and length to be rewarded with four bowling scalps, with the Mount posting a two wicket victory.
