Kings still rule after winning derby

he Classic Builders Reserve Grade Pa¯ pa¯ moa derby played at the Alice Johnson Oval on Saturday was one-way traffic with Pa¯pa¯moa Kings easily repelling the challenge of clubmates Pa¯pa¯moa.

The victory ensured the Kings will hang on to the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket Associatio­n Don Warner Challenge Trophy for at least another week.

Pa¯pa¯moa Kings batted first, and set their club rivals a big target when they were dismissed for 291. Amritpal Singh top scored with 92 while Raminder Singh finished with a neat half-century. Dave Tuck finished his bowling spell with five wickets at a cost of 43 runs.

The current challenge trophy holders held the ascendancy from early in the reply, and bowled their opponents out for 144. Brad Harding and Daniel Johnson top scored with 32 runs each, while Rana Virk and GS Billings did plenty of damage with the ball.

The Papmoa Indian representa­tives will put the Don Warner Challenge prize on the line for the fifth successive week when Katikati pay a visit to the Alice Johnson Oval next Saturday. Papmoa Kings have been the season front-runners in the reserve grade competitio­ns, winning eight (four T20 and four in the competitio­n’s first round) games without tasting defeat.

Te Puke went down to Hawks after Hawks reached 215 for the loss of nine wickets. Gagandeep Singh and Simranjeet Singh were the best of the Te Puke bowling attack with two wickets apiece. Gagandeep Singh backed up his bowling performanc­e to top score with 43 runs, while stand-in captain Barnjit Sodhi got into the 20s as Te Puke were removed for 156.

Te Puke Blue reached 200/8 in their allotted Classic Builders Division One match with Grasshoppe­rs, before the Hoppers chased the target down with four wickets to spare. Bikram Sandhu was in solid form with the bat with an unbeaten 86 runs. Navtej Schal was the best Te Puke Blue bowler, capturing three wickets for 55 runs. ■
