The Pa¯pa¯moa Second XI won the derby with Te Puke in the Classic Builders Reserve Grade, round eight, on Saturday.
Te Puke won the toss at Te Puke Domain and were in immediate trouble at three down for just 18 runs. Batting at four, Daniel Courtis steadied the ship with 26 from 54 deliveries. But the introduction of first-change Pa¯pa¯moa bowler Sean Crotty ripped apart the home side’s fightback, grabbing five wickets for 28. Te Puke were bowled out for just 78 in the 30th over.
Pa¯pa¯moa wasted little time in securing the win points, with openers Nitin Bindal (29no) and Brad Harding (23) getting their side away to a flyer. the Bay of Plenty.
She won her five first to 21 points games, taking the final 21-19.
To win a Bay of Plenty title is no mean feat, but this was Adrienne’s’s third having won the Bay of Plenty Junior Women’s Singles Championship in 2017 and 2019.
As the bowling season has only just begun, there will be many more chances for this very accomplished player to shine this summer.
Victory came with the fifth ball of the 12th over, with Pa¯pa¯moa cruising home with eight wickets still intact.
Current first-round competition leaders Baaj Sports posted a comprehensive win over the Pa¯ pa¯ moa Kings, who didn’t make good use of winning the toss, being removed for 103. Raminder Singh (24) Jasdeep Sidhu (27) and Gurbir Singh (20) offered some resistance to the concerted Baaj Sports bowling attack. At 49 for the loss of a solitary wicket, the writing was on the wall with Baaj Sports posting an easy eight-wicket victory.
Te Puke Blue had a good day at the office in the two rounds of Classic Builders Open T20 played out on Saturday. First up they got home against Mount Maunganui 3, reaching 101 for five, and then restricting the opposition to 70/7.
A solid mid-afternoon batting performance resulted in Te Puke putting up 178 runs at a cost of four wickets against Mount Maunganui 4. Mayank Tandon and Bikram Sandhu both scored half centuries for Te Puke before the bowlers ripped through the Mount reply, to bundle them out for 61.
There was all-round disappointment at the Bay Oval last Thursday when the Classic Builders Reserve Grade T20 shootout to decide the 2022/23 title was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Pa¯pa¯moa Kings and Tauranga Boys’ College second XI had won through to contest the title decider, by way of winning their pools in preliminary competition.
After the game was called off, Western Bay of Plenty Cricket (WBOPCA) officials turned to the rulebook to complete the Reserve Grade T20 title race:
“If the final cannot be played due to weather, the overall Reserve Grade T20 competition winner will be decided on net run rate firstly, and then most wickets taken, calculated on an average per game basis.”
The Pa¯ pa¯ moa Kings were awarded the trophy on net run rate, 0.907, to Tauranga Boys’ College (0.784).
WBOPCA operations and competitions manager Mikael Carter said: “The decision was unanimously agreed upon to be a sensible, although, disappointing one. The weather this summer has caused much frustration, and while it is obviously out of my control, I empathise with the lack of cricket that has been played so far and the cancellation of highlights on the cricket calendar, such as this.”
