20 dog-friendly walks for your best friend

-

Did you know there are over 20 places to take your dog for a walk in the Western Bay? From sandy beaches to native forests, the Western Bay is a doglover’s paradise with both on and off leash exercise options.

Some of the most popular dogfriendly spots managed by Western Bay of Plenty District Council include Puketoki Reserve in Whakamarama, Te Puna Quarry Park, TECT Park and Island View beach to Bowentown beach. Here’s what you need to know to check these out.

Puketoki Reserve is a 34-hectare area of native bush with two walking trails. Dogs can enjoy the shade of the forest path and the cool waters of the Te Puna stream. Remember to always keep your dog on a leash here.

Te Puna Quarry Park offers a combination of nature, culture, and dog-friendly trails, with extensive gardens and sculptures. Dogs must be on a leash and rabbit bait is sometimes used in the park, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your pet.

TECT Park has an off-leash dog exercise area that spans one hectare and is mostly shaded by trees. The area is fully fenced, but very small dogs may be able to escape, so it’s best to keep your leash with you.

Island View beach to Bowentown beach is also dog friendly. We recommend sticking to the beach area roughly between Albacore Ave and Plom Rd — as you can walk your dog there anytime, with no leash.

At the main beach at Waih¯ı Beach, dogs can only be walked at night or early morning (after 7pm and before 9am) from December 21 to February 7. And at Island View Reserve, dogs must be on a leash all summer (Oct-march) to protect nesting birds.

When taking your dog for a walk in the Western Bay, it’s important to always keep your pet under control and to bring a leash and poo bags. Dogs should also be kept on a leash in the main town centre areas of Te Puke, Katikati, and Waih¯ı Beach. Scenic reserves and playgrounds should be avoided at all times.
