Gateway students hold their prizegiving

Practical hands-on learning recognised

-

Te Puke High School held the Gateway, Pathways and Future Trades programme prizegiving recently with a record turnout and lots of families attending to support their students.

The classes have a specific focus on practical hands-on learning and studying externally in an area of interest for students.

At the beginning of the school year, students indicate what work they may be interested in, or if they do not yet know, what their hobbies are and what life skills and personality traits are suited to jobs available.

In consultation with the student, a suitable work experience placement is then found.

The work experience generally is one day per week, for various lengths of time, in conjunction with the employers’ wishes.

Students enrolled in the Future Trades programme will attend Toi Ohomai or another tertiary institution one or two days a week, where they gain credits through studying a subject of their choice.

This year students have been attending diving, construction, engineering,

automotive, forestry, boatbuilding and creative industries courses off site.

At the prizegiving, two students were surprised with a fulltime job offer by the employers of their work experience placement.

Jimmy Peake has been offered fulltime employment with MATCO Civil Contactors and Liam Tanner will start his diesel mechanic apprenticeship

with Brandt Equipment later this month. Judah Wipahi has also been

offered an apprenticeship with Cavanagh Motors. This is not a requirement from employers.

The Gateway class offers Year 12 and 13 students the opportunity to participate in a workplace with hands-on learning in their selected future pathway or an opportunity to try out a potential employment workplace.

The Future Trades programme offers students in Years 12 and 13 the opportunity to engage in hands-on trades training at Toi Ohomai or other tertiary institute that can lead to future apprenticeships, employment, skills-based qualifications or further tertiary trades training.
