- WESTERN BAY CRICKET

Two Western Bay cricket teams’ unbeaten records went at the weekend.

Mount Maunganui and Sher E Punjab Te Puke were both beaten by Baaj Sports’ sides in the Western Bay Cricket Association’s combined division one and two T20 competition. Rounds 5 and 6 were played at the weekend.

Sher E Punjab Te Puke posted a very competitive total in reaching 192 for the loss of eight wickets, against the Baaj Second XI. Eighty-four runs posted by Bivek Singh played a big part in the Sher E Punjab innings.

The Baaj reply was anchored by Bikram Singh who hammered 92 off just 40 balls. Navpreet Singh was also in good form in reaching 43 before being dismissed, with his side reaching their target with the third ball of the 16th over.

The Baaj Sports first team batted first against Mount Maunganui and posted 141/8. Vikas Tiwari was the best of the Baaj batters registering a neat half-century. Four wickets from Rajesh Kumar and Gurinder Singh returning 3/16, did the damage as Mount Maunganui were bowled out for 116.

Round Six saw Bay Blasters and Tauranga Boys’ College unable to be seperated. Bay Blasters reached 140/6, with Tauranga Boys stranded on 140 for the loss of eight wickets after their allotted 20 overs.

Bay of Plenty Women’s captain Tash Wakelin was in superb touch in Cadets Division Four encounter with Bay Blasters, in hitting a century. Bay Blasters set Cadets a solid target, when they were dismissed for 181 in their 40 over per side game. Wakelin opened her side’s reply in tandem with Bay of Plenty Women’s wicket keeper Amelia Harvey (23), and were in a solid position when Harvey was removed at 57/1. The Bay captain continued to defy the opposition bowlers and hit a neat century before being dismissed. Her 100 runs came from 87 balls and included 14 fours. Joshua Peterson-guy picked up the reigns after Wakelin was removed to post an unbeaten 34, with victory coming in the 26th over with Cadets having eight wickets in hand.
