Marathon effort for dear friend

- BAYLEY MOOR

Driven by the memory of their friend Tessa Taylor, a group of women are running the Kerikeri Half Marathon.

Team Tessa Taylor (TTT) currently has 38 members with the group growing and keen to welcome new participants.

Tessa lost her battle with melanoma in August this year. She had taught at Kerikeri Primary School for 12 years.

A contingent of teachers form a big part of the team.

Pip Stewart says a week after Tessa’s passing the idea came about to complete the 21.1km event on November 19.

‘‘There was no excuse really, she’s an inspiration.’’

Tessa completed a number of half marathons, marathons and triathlons, often training in her lunch breaks, Stewart says.

Stewart says she always spoke so well of her family and was very proud of her kids.

Davina Derecourt says Tessa always lived life to the full.

‘‘It has really made me re-think where my priorities lie. Having a balance with family and having a healthy lifestyle.’’

Jean Johnston who co-taught with Tessa earlier this year describes her as having a vivacious personality.

‘‘She was really protective of the kids and was patient with lots of enthusiasm. Her energy was infectious. She had an amazing coping ability and just got on with things.’’

The ASB Kerikeri Half Marathon features a 21.1km course with participants starting at Okaihau and winding up at the Kerikeri Domain.

The team are looking forward to the event with members taking part in the hybrid (run/walk) and running events with some entering for the first time.

Rebecca Thomas says no tweak or pain will matter.

‘‘We have nothing to complain about, it puts everything into perspective.’’

Stewart says they hope to do Tessa proud.

‘‘It’s a celebration with something she liked doing.’’

The team will also be fundraising for The Cancer Society with a special bank account set up for the cause.

The wheelchair/race chair entrants start at 7.25, with walkers being the last group to leave at 8am.
