Head students make ‘cool team’

- BAYLEY MOOR

Anything is possible when you put your mind to it, say Northland College’s head students for 2017.

Te Kopa Kopa and Aroha Lawrence, both 17, have been selected for the top student leadership roles by a peer-voting system. The cousins both use wheelchairs and say they are proud to be representing their school next year.

‘‘It is cool knowing that students accept us for how we are and even though we are disabled we are treated as equal candidates to everyone else,’’ Lawrence says.

Kopa says a ramp built next to the stage was a giveaway that something special might be happening at the senior prizegiving in November.

Lawrence says she thought she was ‘‘hearing things’’ when her name was called.

‘‘I went ‘wait did they just say my name?’ ‘‘I was hyperventilating, I was really excited.’’

The pair are also continuing their families legacy of being head students at Northland College. Kopa’s brother was Head Boy in 2015, while Lawrence’s brother was Deputy Head Boy in 2014.

Lawrence says she is looking forward to helping her school, teachers and students to continue making the school better.

Kopa says anything is possible. ‘‘There is no such thing as impossible.’’
