Maarten Holl captured this image on the morning of January 21 at the Capital Classic Ocean swim in Wellington Harbour.

The swim, from Frank Kitts to Freyberg Beach, shows the elite swimmers, pictured at the top of photo, watched by the second group of swimmers in the water and spectators on shore at Frank Kitts Park.

‘‘I liked the three-layer effect this photo has,’’ Holl says.

‘‘It was also something a bit different for this type of event. It’s pretty hard to get an action shot without being on the water. I set myself up on the grassy area in Frank Kitts park and used a long lens to compress the image.’’
