Bottom dollar the only concern

-

Dr Mark Peterson’s comments on the NZ Medical Association’s reaction to an Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing decision (Letters, January 29) is the first bit of sense in the self-serving conflict over Wellington’s drinking problems.

The vested commercial interests of the council are undeniable – revenue from licensing the liquor and hospitality industry and brewers and suppliers.

Extended hours and more outlets are a win-win for them. Reining in opening hours and licences means a loss of profit or other revenue, hence the reluctance to impose restraint.
