Bottom dollar the only concern
Dr Mark Peterson’s comments on the NZ Medical Association’s reaction to an Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing decision (Letters, January 29) is the first bit of sense in the self-serving conflict over Wellington’s drinking problems.
The vested commercial interests of the council are undeniable – revenue from licensing the liquor and hospitality industry and brewers and suppliers.
Extended hours and more outlets are a win-win for them. Reining in opening hours and licences means a loss of profit or other revenue, hence the reluctance to impose restraint.
