Ko’s rise to top no surprise to Park

-

OUTGOING world No 1 Inbee Park says ‘‘there’s no surprise’’ in losing the top spot in women’s golf to Lydia Ko because of the 17-year-old Kiwi’s professionalism.

Park, who had been world No 1 since October, said losing the mantle was ‘‘not the end of the world’’.

‘‘I think her age itself just surprises me,’’ said Park. ‘‘How she acts on the golf course and how she can play consistently. She is, I think, treating all the things so professionally and not like just a kid. There’s no surprise being on top.’’

Her thoughts were echoed by another former world No 1, American Stacy Lewis.

‘‘It was just a matter of time. She’s playing some great golf right now and she’s confident. She’s rolling in putts and it’s good. She’s a good kid and a good person to see at the top of the world.’’

Park said being world No 1 at 17 wasn’t something she could have imagined possible.

‘‘I don’t know how it feels like. I’m sure No 1 in the world will probably feel the same [at any age]. That’s where she wanted to be and it’s quite early, but yeah, that’s where she’s aimed for.’’

Park said Ko will now have to deal with the pressure of having a target on her back and continuing her good form every week to maintain her ranking.

The LPGA Tour heads to the Bahamas this week for the Bahamas LPGA Classic.
