Dual brewfests

Sud-lovers can look forward to two brew-based events this weekend. Malthouse is hosting Sourfest, a celebration of the nation’s best sour brews with some rare offerings and new lunches to be found among the 24 beers from 20 breweries. There’ll be some complimentary food platters and free Quick-eze on hand too.

If you prefer a wider selection try Malty By Nature at St John’s Bar & Restaurant, with food pairing menus, 10 beers for $50 and mini tasters starting from $6 if you’re not sure what brew you want to commit to. Both kick off this Friday (March 17) with free entry. Check out Facebook pages for more details.

Divine drinks

If beer really isn’t your thing you might want to consider (a) why you’re currently in Wellington, the craft beer capital of the world and (b) trying one of the new cocktails at CGR Merchant instead. Presenting a list of elixirs designed with Greek gods and mythical lords in mind, the recipes showcase the latest batch of delicious in-house infused spirits, such as ‘‘The Mischievous Pendent’’, a rose flavoured rummy twist on the classic negroni, and a feijoa gin based ‘‘Crown of Stars’’. Expect some unusual treats, such as deep-fried basil leaves, in this innovate collection of concoctions and if you want to know the stories behind the intriguing cocktail names, just ask.

Taking it cheesy

If you prefer your food conceptual as opposed to edible, pop along to the performance of Cheese this Saturday afternoon (March 18) for a multi-sensory journey into the world of cheese-making, as part of Capital E’s National Arts Festival for children and young people.

Performed by the Java Dance Theatre, the whimsical tale promises an all-singing, dancing cast of milkmaids and goatherds, with flying hay bales and milk jets. If you’re allergic to dairy, fear not as synthetic milk will be used.
