Grand rebrand follows $12m renovations

- CHLOE WINTER

A four-star hotel in central Wellington has been rebranded following a $12 million transformation.

Mercure Wellington has become Grand Mercure Wellington following a revamp of 114 rooms and suites throughout the hotel, which is situated on The Terrace.

The renovations included new decor, new televisions and sound systems, and new bathroom features. On top of that, three new rooms were built.

A gym complete with running and cycling equipment will also be open in the middle of the year.

Gillian Millar, AccorHotels’ senior vice-president of operations for New Zealand, Fiji and French Polynesia, said the upgrade was an opportunity to further leverage the brand’s presence in New Zealand.

The hotel also has a new standalone restaurant, Forage Kitchen and Bar.

‘‘Forage Kitchen and Bar is reflective of Wellington’s vibrant food scene, incorporating a forage philosophy by utilising every edible component of local produce, from flower to root and nose to tail,’’ Millar said.

Grand Mercure Wellington joins a network of more than 40 Grand Mercure hotels in the AsiaPacific region.

One of Wellington’s newest hotels, the Sofitel, is expected to remain closed for months, after damage was caused by a fire in the restaurant.

Meanwhile, the Amora Hotel announced in April that it was closing for up to a year to undergo a major refurbishment. The 192-room Amora Hotel said it will close its doors on May 27.

In October the 137-room Park Hotel, which bridges Lambton Quay and The Terrace, opened. Developer Alex Cassels refurbished an inner-city office building.
