The buzzing factor

-

The eye-watering costs of introducing light rail into Sydney CBD (Letters, July 3) makes you wonder why they are building it. It’s simple – it’s to make Sydney even more vibrant and buzzing. As Sydney’s leading transport academic Professor David Hensher puts it: ‘‘Rail is sexy, bus is boring’’.

Light rail looks good, it’s sleek, it’s modern and not only does it make passengers feel good but it makes residents, schools, hotels, businesses who have a light rail service close to them come alive.

So what about the cost? Well, as Henry Royce of Rolls-Royce said, ‘‘People will remember the quality long after the price is forgotten.’’ So come on, planners, let’s not just get Wellington ‘‘moving’’, let’s get our city dancing to light rail. DARYL COCKBURN Wellington Central
