Our drinking culture

-

Dr Andy Towers (We created the drink problem, not youth, July 4) attributes our binge drinking culture starting with the 6 o’clock swill. He apparently wasn’t there or he’d have known the drinking age was 21 not 20.

He then takes statistics of alcohol consumption per head of population from that time when most women didn’t drink against today’s statistics where 18 year olds of both sexes can and do drink way into the small hours.

Back then men met after work for an hour with their mates then weaved home on their bikes. They were good fathers there for their kids, not leaving them sitting outside the pub for hours as you hear of today.

Bring back 6 o’clock closing, I say. CHRIS BOWEN Lower Hutt
