TO THE POINT

For the Government to give such a low status to aged-care workers is a disgrace. The industry could not survive without these mainly Asian and Pacific workers, who do such a fantastic job. I know from first-hand experience. For goodness’ sake approve more, not fewer, of these great people into NZ.

Peter Jackson – hero to zero? Neil Harrap, Thorndon

Sir Peter Jackson wants a 25 year lease commitment from Wellington City Council but the right to abandon building after 2 years if doesn’t work out. That is outrageous. It is either a 25 years lease for both parties or not on, surely. Let him build his own props museum to monetise the memory of his rapidly fading films.

Nelson Wellington Water justifies allowing golf and bowling clubs to continue irrigating because they ’’are valuable assets, that club members own and pay to maintain’’. Exactly the same is true of every Wellington resident’s garden. Further reference to such organisations’ ‘‘position in the community’’ suggests Wellington Water is actively discriminating in favour of the rich and the powerful in the application of restrictions. Jim McAloon, Pukerua Bay

In the mindset of being unable to find enough evidence to prosecute anyone over Pike River or the CTV building in Christchurch the police continue to try to prosecute Malcolm Rewa who is already serving a sentence of preventative detention and probably will never be released anyway. Different standards being applied I think while victims of the disasters still cry for justice. Graham Dick, Masterton

I thought John Key was the most photographed PM of all time, but, John, Jacinda is poised to dethrone you big time. Gary Hedges, Avalon

Hurrah, a sensible suggestion for easing traffic congestion east of Mt Victoria (City-to-airport ferry plan, Dec 7). Yes please! Forget the loony light rail lobby and its plans to clog our roads further with monstrous trams. Utilise the sea. It will still be there when disasters munt road and rail – think the earthquakes in Christchurch and Kaiko¯ura and slips in the Ngaio and Manawatu¯ gorges. Alan Knowles, Karaka Bays

Joe Bennett has put on an alarming amount of weight in two weeks. By his latest reckoning, he is 120kg, whereas previously he was 108kg. At this rate he will be 135kg by Christmas (or just after). This does not bode well for Joe, nor for the future of his column. Allan Menzies, Levin

After eight years of US presidential Christmas cards that didn’t mention Christmas, this year President Trump’s card wishes recipients a Merry Christmas, and a beautiful Nativity scene has been erected in the White House.
