Auckland reign supreme again

- GOLF

Auckland have won their seventh interprovincial women’s golf title in nine years, continuing their dominance of the domestic scene.

They were superior throughout the tournament at Sherwood Park Golf Club in Northland before beating Canterbury 4-1 in the decider yesterday.

Auckland were anchored by Caryn Khoo, who was later named player of tournament, after going through the week undefeated, an honour she shared with team-mates Carmen Lim and Siyi Keh.

Khoo was playing in the event for the first time in six years, following a long stint at college in the United States.

In 2018, she will turn professional, which means this will also be the last time she takes part in it.

‘‘It feels awesome,’’ said Khoo. ‘‘It’s been a very long time since I was here and it’s nice to do it in my last appearance, so it’s a pretty good feeling.’’

Brittney Dryland finished things in style for Auckland, sinking a 20-foot putt to claim her fifth interprovincial title.

‘‘Every year we have a great team that gets along on and off the course, so I’m really happy for all of them,’’ Dryland said.

‘‘This is my fifth win and it feels as good as the first. It’s been an awesome journey with all the Auckland girls and I love this event.’’

In the men’s interprovincial tournament at Mangawhai Golf Club in Northland, North Harbour, Waikato, Auckland and Hawke’s Bay have advanced to today’s semifinals.
