The 4K-UHD release of HBO’s biggest hit since Game of Thrones leaves Sky’s broadcast in the dust. This mesmerising sci-fi western set in a theme park is breathtaking on disc, where it’s presented in both the HDR10 and Dolby Vision colour formats, and includes Dolby Atmos audio, a posse of extras, and a Corporate Guidebook for Westworld employees.

This Stephen King adaptation falls far short of the author’s inspiration – The Lord of the Rings meets The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – but it may one of the best reasons yet to upgrade to a 4K-UHD TV and player: it’s a stunning, native 4K transfer with HDR highlights that will blow you away quicker than Idris Elba’s Gunslinger. So forget the film’s failings and revel in how its reference-quality video looms above all others.

Your eyes will truly see the glories of Ken

Burns’ landmark documentary series with its 25th anniversary 4K-remastering on

Blu-ray. This 1080p upgrade retains the

4:3 formatting while making everything sharper, cleaner and more stable, from archival photos to original footage. New extras reveal how the 11 hours were restored and candid observations by historian Shelby Foote that were recorded three years before his death in 2005.

46 years after the Dirty Harry duo of Clint Eastwood and director Don Siegel made the original, Sofia Coppola directs her own adaptation of the Gothic Civil War thriller about a wounded Yankee soldier (Colin Farrell) who seeks refuge in a Virginia school for girls run by Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst. Haunting, atmospheric and surprisingly funny, this is a beautifully filmed and leisurely paced drama of unease that creepily builds to a horrific outcome.

Modesty Blaise meets Kingsman in this ultra-chic, ultra-violent Cold War thriller starring Charlize Theron as a literally drop-dead gorgeous secret agent. It’s less Le Carre and more MTV but the sizzling visuals make this Blonde worth bottling on 4K-UHD, especially with its terrific filmmakers’ commentary.
