TO THE POINT

What a fantastic number of people turned up for this mass demonstration and support for the youth protest against access to guns in the US. One question I would like to ask is: How many of the young people attending these mass demonstrations have dads, brothers, uncles, owning guns and are they willing to hand them in for destruction? There are a huge number of people there so there must be a huge number there who own guns.

A recent news item stated that thousands of overstayers are being deported at enormous cost to the New Zealand taxpayer, only to be let back in again next time they apply. Why are overstayers not fined the cost of their deportation and not let back in again until they have paid their fine? I’m sure this policy would soon bring about a considerable drop in the numbers of overstayers. Carole Naylor, Papakowai

Why don’t they manufacture cricket balls with a rough side and a shiny side? Then no-one would have to cheat, it would speed the game up, and make it more interesting. Mike Doig, Plimmerton

l see once again the so called climate experts have flown from all parts of the world to express their ideas about saving the planet. How many more times do they have to go over the same ground, and of course all the carbon emissions they create. With all the technology there, they don’t have to fly all around the world. Again on the gravy train.

The official election of half of the Green Party leadership is drawing to a close. In the next fortnight the party’s branches will decide how its delegates should vote in an electoral style voting system. The two candidates, Marama Davidson and Julie Anne Genter, seem capable people but I have concerns about Genter’s attitude to old, white men, particularly those who are successful and earn more than the average. Perhaps those voters in this group should think carefully who they choose. Frank Glover, Waikanae

Re $40,000 to cross the road (March 28); how utterly ridiculous, I know of no chicken who could ever afford that amount of money. Mervyn Harrison, Wainuiomata

Does anyone know of a rational explanation as to why those of us aged over 80 are not eligible for the free shingles vaccine?
