Park rangers slain

-

Five rangers and their driver were killed yesterday during an attack in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A sixth ranger was wounded. The vast reserve is known for its population of rare mountain gorillas. Yesterday’s attack was the worst loss of life in the history of the park, which has seen more than 170 rangers killed while protecting animals over the last two decades. The rangers face threats from armed militia, poachers and bandits.
