Fa­tal­ity at sawmill

A per­son is dead af­ter an in­ci­dent at a Wairarapa sawmill yes­ter­day morn­ing. Kiwi Lum­ber con­firmed the in­ci­dent hap­pened at its mill near Master­ton on Nor­man Ave, Wain­gawa in the Carter­ton district. Spokes­woman Liz Read said ‘‘the staff and the site man­ager are ex­tremely trau­ma­tised’’. The per­son died at 8.35am yes­ter­day, po­lice said. The per­son’s next-of-kin has been no­ti­fied. The cir­cum­stances that led to the worker’s death have not yet been pub­licly re­leased. Carter­ton Mayor John Booth said his sym­pa­thies go out to the fam­ily. ‘‘What an ab­so­lutely ter­ri­ble thing to hap­pen, es­pe­cially at this time of year get­ting close to Christ­mas.’’ Ac­cord­ing to Kiwi Lum­ber’s web­site, the sawmill is ‘‘a struc­tural mill fo­cussed on pro­duc­ing fram­ing tim­ber pri­mar­ily for do­mes­tic con­struc­tion’’. An­drea McCafferty, who worked across the street at Main­freight of­fices said Kiwi Lum­ber’s gate was locked, which was ‘‘not like them’’. WorkSafe said it was no­ti­fied of the fa­tal­ity and was in­ves­ti­gat­ing. ‘‘This is now a live in­ves­ti­ga­tion, and we are un­able to dis­cuss any op­er­a­tional de­tail.’’
